In June 2010 the Province of Ontario will do away with its provincial sales tax (PST) and the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will come into effect. The stated intent of the Ontario Government is that the impact of HST on our nonprofit sector is revenue neutral. Indeed, the provincial government made a significant effort to ensure this was so by establishing an 82% rebate rate for the PST portion of the HST. The government, however, did not have all the information to truly understand the full impact of HST on the sector, nor did we.

Students enrolled in the Ryerson University Masters Program in Public Policy and Public Administration asked for your help in guiding their development of a private member's bill for the Ontario legislature. The bill was to mandate that provincially-receipted fundraising events dedicate a small number of places to be made available to small budget charities at a reasonable cost.  read more »

This year's annual gathering of provincial networks was held in Halifax in February. The focus of the meeting was "Building Sustainable Relationships between Non-Profit/Voluntary Sector and Provincial & Territorial Governments".  Attached is a summary report of the Halifax gathering as well as a summary of provincial activities.

The Ontario Nonprofit Network submitted a brief to the National Task force examining proposed changes to the federal act governing not-for-profit organizations.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation recently undertook in-depth conversations with nonprofits about the impact of the economic downturn. Challenges and Opportunities in the Economic Crisis is a 22-page report that includes how nonprofits are handling the challenges and suggestions for how OTF can  help them. One of those suggestions was to encourage OTF to partner with sector networks and other funders to help leverage the impact of its grants.  read more »
