Income Tax Compliance Workshops

Ensuring compliance with the Income Tax Act may seem confusing but we’re here to help you by providing plain-language resources, tools and practical training so you can quickly get the information you need to ensure you are meeting your legal obligations.

In September, ONN is hosting a series of free workshops for small and/or rural charities on how to comply with the Income Tax Act. These workshops are best suited to your Executive Director, Board Chair and Treasurer, or the designated person responsible for completing your CRA public information form (T3010).

All workshops described below will be held at the Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Avenue, Toronto (Suite 120) and have a limited number of spaces.

Tips and Tools for Maintaining Charitable Status 
Tuesday, September 22nd - 5:00- 7:30 p.m.

Designed for Board Presidents and Executive Directors.

Are you aware of the regulations for maintaining your charitable status? If key people left your organization, would you have the supporting documentation and collective knowledge to carry on with your organization’s mandate?  This session provides awareness of key expectations associated with maintaining charitable status and outlines various strategies, tools and templates to support Board Members and Executive Directors in operating their charity in a transparent, accountable and efficient manner. Special emphasis will be placed on agenda planning, financial reporting, and awareness of the records, documents and information critical to a charity’s history and operations. 

 
Fundraiser’s Receipt Book

How do you determine the tax receipt amount for a fundraising dinner? What are the limits for providing recognition gifts to donors? Many chairs of fundraising committees, events, or campaigns are overwhelmed with the logistics of organizing their events and answering these and related questions. The Fundraiser's Receipt Book contains tips, check-lists, key definitions, and formulas as they relate to fundraising and receipting. This workshop also includes a variety of resources in order to satisfy Canada Revenue Agency’s new fundraising guidelines. 

 

Treasurer’s Chest
Thursday, Sept. 17th - 1:30-4:00 p.m.  or Saturday, Sept. 26th - 9:00-11:30 am

Designed for the Treasurer or designated person responsible for completing your charities' public information form (T3010).

 
This workshop focuses on the treasurer’s role in developing and monitoring the budget, preparing financial reports, overseeing financial record keeping, and preparing reports and motions for meetings of the board of directors and annual general meetings. Whether the treasurer is doing these tasks alone, in collaboration with others, or simply reviewing the work done by paid employees, the Treasurer’s Chest will support this vital role. Workshop participants will come away with useful templates, tools, information, and resources.

Facilitator – Steve Cino, Niagara College

Steve is the Alumni Coordinator in the Niagara College Foundation and Community Relations Department. His career in Education included roles from teacher to Education Officer for the Ministry of Education with specialization as a consultant, change agent and project lead. More recently, Steve has been involved in the non-profit sector as an Executive Director, Project Manager for the Voluntary Sector IM/IT Technology initiative, Curriculum Lead for Charities on Board, and the Visionary Council for Niagara based Active Living 50+ initiatives.
