Newfoundland's profitable lesson on non-profits. What do we want in Ontario?

Two years ago, relations between the government and voluntary sector in Newfoundland were roughly where they are in Ontario today.

The two sides called themselves partners, but it was a polite fiction. The province's 23,000 non-profit workers and 187,000 volunteers felt powerless and undervalued. The bureaucrats who doled out grants were weary of their constant pleas for money.

Then Danny Williams stepped in. The premier made it clear that he considered community agencies vital to Newfoundland's way of life and he wanted them treated with respect. In 2007, he made an election commitment to appoint a minister with specific responsibility for the non-profit sector and set up a special secretariat within his government. read more »

ONN's Disbursement Quote Letter to Minister Flaherty

ONN wrote Minister Flaherty in support of Imagine Canada's request to end the current disbursement quota for Charities. We stated that Ontario charities are willing to participate in the design of more effective measures to ensure charities do not inappropriately accumulate funds. Please see attached letter.

Call to Open Stimulus Fund to Nonprofits

This email was sent to federal and provincial politicians asking that the second round of the stimulus fund be opened up to include nonprofit proposals.
