Today I learned that wikimedia has been denied charitable status in the UK. Andrew Turvey explains here. I have also recently learned that the CRA Charities Dept has anulled the charitable status of Phoenix Community Foundation. They 'anulled' it claiming that the objects granted to Phoenix should never have been granted after being in operation for 30 years. Responses to CRA's Fundraising Consultation process

I did a little sniffing today around this consultation and the implications. This is what I learned.

The fundraising guidelines are really aimed at catching the charity that spends most of its revenues raising money (e.g. mothers against drunk driving and fake charities) CRA allows as acceptable costs up to 35% but with additional consideration for extenuating circumstances such as building a donor base.  read more »

CRA Consultation on proposed policy on fundraising

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has posted on its web site its "Consultation on proposed policy on fundraising by Registered Charities" document. The paper addresses proposed guidelines for CRA's Charities Directorate on fundraising activities by registered charities. CRA is seeking feedback before July 31st from charities, individuals involved in charitable work, government departments and the public on how the guidelines can be streamlined or made more useful for charities assessing their fundraising practices.
